Overview
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key issued by Certifying Authorities (CAs) to validate and authenticate the identity of an individual or entity conducting electronic transactions or communications over the internet. It serves as an electronic equivalent of a handwritten signature, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of digital documents and messages exchanged online. The DSC contains information about the certificate holder, including their name, email address, and public key, which is encrypted and linked to their private key. The private key, stored securely on the user’s computer or USB token, is used to electronically sign documents or authenticate messages, while the public key is shared with others to verify the signature or message. DSCs are commonly used in various applications such as e-filing of income tax returns, e-tendering, online banking, e-procurement, digital contracts, and electronic transactions with government agencies. They play a crucial role in ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation of digital communications and transactions, thereby fostering trust and security in the digital ecosystem.
